A geological field trip around Perth for maths boffins – from basin to basement to brewery
Trip leader: Nick Timms (Curtin University)
This day trip, we will embark on a journey through geological time, starting from the most recent sedimentary rocks deposited in the Perth Basin to ancient crystalline basement of the Yilgarn Craton to the east of the Darling Fault Scarp. At each stop we will focus on the outcrops and how they fit into a regional context, and ponder current challenges faced by geoscience researchers that could benefit from quantitative mathematical approaches. Cogitation will be lubricated by a visit to a local brewery during the trip.
The trip will run on Friday 8 September. Leave from the conference venue at 08:00, returning by early evening. Lunch is not included so BYO packed lunch. We will visit a brewery for refreshments towards the end of the day.
Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and suitable clothing/footwear for the weather.
Cost of the trip is $50 per person.
